07/07/00:

I've been reading a lot about the extended use of bounty hunters in the next film (example Boba Fett, Aura Sing (sp?), etc).  What's the deal here?  I can guess who would be using the hunters -but whom would they hunt?  I would hope to God that these Jedi George has paraded for decades will able to fend off even the mightiest of bounty hunters.  What are your thoughts on the bounty hunter issue?
Tusken Boy

As far as the infamous bounty hunters go: I think their role in SW2 would be limited to assassin work. Bounty Hunters really are separate entities from assassins, but I think sometimes in the SW universe the distinction gets blurred. If you think Darth Sidious would be using them, that's a good guess. I think their role for SW3 is well defined (hunting down Jedi). I agree with you on hunters vs. Jedi. However...Boba Fett almost blew Luke's head off on Cloud City, and he was the only one who gave Luke any trouble at all during the fight on Tatooine (except for that guy who shot his hand. Ouch.) My feelings are that the hunters will be used more as trackers, possibly directing much larger (Stormtrooper?) groups of forces in for the kill.  WJ

I really liked your site, mainly because it presents intellectual discussions about the Star Wars saga, something you don't see too often on other Star Wars sites.
Daniel

Well, cool, that's the main reason I'm here! Thanks for the compliment!  WJ

Leeanna Walsman: "a skilled bounty hunter"- Aura Sing?? I think so... But what part could Daniel Logan have? "a mysterious young boy" Any ideas?
Athena

Actually I do have an idea about Daniel Logan, but I really would like to see a picture of him first. What we know is that he is 13 years old, a "mysterious young boy", and that he is the only actor that the official Star Wars site hasn't shown a picture of. Well, try this theory:

SW2 takes place approximately 10 years after the events of TPM. Anakin was about 8 or 9 in TPM and will be 18 or 19 in SW2. Well, what age falls nicely between the two? 13 or 14... I think there is a strong possibility we will see this kid as Anakin Skywalker, age 14, in a flashback sequence. "Nonsense!" you say! Star Wars never has had a flashback! Well, Star Wars never had midichlorians either, but there may be a precedent. Look at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when the late River Phoenix portrays a young Harrison Ford. Indy is Lucas' baby, so we can say he did it once before. I know it's a stretch, but there will be just way too much skipped over between TPM and SW2, and a scene like that could really make the audience understand  better the timeframe and events leading up to the main story.

I may be totally wrong. The kid might not look like Jake/Hayden at all, let's get a picture!  WJ

Your one reader objected to the fact that the Queen had granted audience to a droid---well, that had occurred to me too, and I also thought that it was really odd that she'd assign Padmé to clean the thing up after its adventures on the hull; this has come to mind:

perhaps Amidala needed an excuse and a place to download some sensitive information about Naboo that she had managed to sneak out from under the Viceroy's snout---later on in the film we see R2 projecting maps of Theed and the secret ways into the palace prior to the final action sequences....not info I would expect you'd usually find in an astro-droid's memory bank....anyway, that's the most reasonable explanation my brain's kicked out so far. (Your reader is right however, granting and audience to a droid is silliness.....)
Sue

That's not a bad theory behind that certain silliness, but here's another take on it: perhaps the young handmaiden impersonating the Queen "assigned" Padmé to go clean-up Artoo just as a way to get her out of the public eye. The two girls look very similar, but if the two were near each other for any inordinate period of time, people would start to figure it out after a while. Either way, could have been a better scene.  WJ

Hey Jason, Just wondering if you have ever found an explanation as to why Obi-Wan placed Leia on Alderaan with a new family and name but Luke was left on Tatooine with the Skywalker name? Surely Vader or a lackey would have noticed this eventually. Could it be a plan of the cagey Obi-Wan to lure his old student into an ambush? I know what you're thinking, "it's only a movie, get over it!", and I usually would but this is buggin' me. Thanks,
Jesse Garden

Well, I've thought about your question and can only say that I hope Lucas has thought up a really good reason for this, because I can't. Leia's makes enough sense, so the only theory I can come up with is this:

Perhaps something occurs, some type of traumatic event which Anakin (before or after he becomes Vader, I'm not sure) declares he'll never set foot on Tatooine again. Or perhaps Obi-Wan senses this and knows it to be true. This may sound a little hokey and over-simplified, but it has a little precedent:

Vader never seemed to have a problem leading from the front, right? I mean, it was his whole style of leadership. He was with the Stormtroopers when they captured Leia's ship, and he was in the first echelon of assault troops on Hoth. Vader has demonstrated a personal involvement in missions. So why didn't he go down onto the surface of Tatooine and personally oversee the capture of the two droids? A quote from the novel gives a little insight:

"Be as subtle as possible; there is no need to attract attention, even on this miserable outpost world [Tatooine]"  -Darth Vader, SW: ANH

Perhaps Vader realizes his presence would attract unwanted attention, or maybe it was another reason.  WJ

Okay, I've read the first 100 pages of "Rogue Planet." The beginning looks good. In the beginning Anakin is entering an illegal race on Coruscant. Anakin is showing the "cracks towards evil." It will be good for anyone who wants a good hint. (I know Lucas didn't write it, but, it is a pretty good story.)

A Pod Race on Coruscant? That would be pretty dangerous, but would make for an exciting action sequence I would imagine. I don't think entering an illegal race is evil, but it does show Anakin's rebellious nature.  WJ

Hi, first of all, great site!  I was watching ROTJ and was wondering who are those two people that Palpatine talks to after Darth Vader leaves (They are dressed in purple colored robes). The scene is in the Emperors throne room on the Death Star when Palpatine tells Vader to move the Imperial Fleet to the far side of Endor. I was hoping you could find something out for me,
Matt

Those jokers you're referring to are an interesting pair, and a lot of speculation has arisen about them. I have only been able to find two references to them, and one only a possible reference. Here is a hint from the intro of ANH (from "The Journal of the Whills", no less...):

"Once secure in office, he [Palpatine] declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears."

Here is a quote from Nilo Rodis-Jamero, assistant art-director and visual effects creator on ESB and costume designer on ROTJ, from Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays:

"On Jedi, one of the most exciting things from a design point of view was the advisors who surround the Emperor. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what they might look like because I thought it was important that through them you might understand the Emperor's world is like. Coming from a Catholic background, I sort of made a joke, and that's why they look like bishops. So they wear red, and they have elaborate headgear. This was a challenge because it wasn't in the script, and you see them only briefly in the movie."

Hope that helps!  WJ

The reason why the emperor wanted Luke was because Vader was on his last limbs and Vader was old and clumsy.
Boscoe

Um...thanks Boscoe!  WJ

What planet is Obi-Wan Kenobi from? I think it could be a fair assumption that he is from Tatooine, as his brother Owen is a farmer on that planet. But I also have some doubts about this assumption, in that, when Qui-Gon first discovers that Anakin has a high midichlorian count he tells Shmi that had Anakin been born in a Republic controlled system that he would have been identified early. This suggests to me that Obi-Wan was born in a Republic controlled system.

Having said this, why would Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru choose to move from a Republic controlled system to a Hutt controlled hellhole of a planet? Is there that much to be made in farming on Tatooine? I just recently discovered your site, so this line of questioning may have already been addressed, but I hope you could lend some insight into this. I appreciate your fact-based views on SW events, rather than rampant speculation, keep up the good work.
JL

You bring up a rather good point, and possibly a plot loophole. It is generally acknowledged, as you say, that Obi-Wan is from Tatooine. Now if he was born there, your argument, if Qui-Gon is to be believed, is valid. However, Anakin was not born on Tatooine. He told Padmé that he came to Tatooine when he was about three. So whichever planet Anakin was born on was not Republic-controlled. Another possibility is that Tatooine only recently fell under the control of the Hutts. If Obi-Wan was born there 25 or so years ago, perhaps it was a Republic-controlled planet. Then again maybe Obi-Wan was born elsewhere.  WJ
