12/29/98: Okay, okay, I know what I said below, but I just couldn't help myself.
Forum has been updated....WJ

12/27/98: Well, more than likely this will be my last update of 1998. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has written to me and signed my guestbook. I would also like to thank newsdroid.com and allexperts.com for affiliate status.
Episode II and III sections have been added to the Fact and Logic sections! Be sure to check these new sections out, as they are filled with information that has been carefully (imho) arranged and consolidated.
Happy New Year all, much more soon to come....WJ

12/24/98: Season's Greetings. I have changed a few things on this site graphically, and added a new logo at the bottom of pages. Let me know how you like the arrangement. More to come soon....WJ

12/20/98: My index page is back up and running, after a server error that prevented it to load on IE 4.0 was fixed. The big topic of conversation online recently has been the identity of Darth Sidious and his relationship to Palpatine. I have done a large update concerning that (and related issues) which starts in my Fact section. It is best to read this first and then head over to the Logic section where all the afformentioned facts are analyzed and deductions are made. Use these facts yourself to make deductions of your own and share them with me. Latest additions and changes once again (and from now on) will be in teal font.
The Official Star Wars website has had many excellent updates recently, so please go check it out if you haven't looked at it in a while....WJ

12/16/98: Just a few quick notes:
As you may or may not know, my index page (the one on most bookmarks and links) is mysteriously down. The report is of a closed server, and the error messages report an invalid or unrecognized URL. The rest of my site is up and functional, however, and the problem should be cleared up shortly. Remember to link to this page for all updates.
On another note, I have removed the old logo from the bottom of my site and am designing a new logo for it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Master Xizor at Black Sun who originally designed it for me as a gesture of goodwill. Good luck to Xizor and their site.
Lastly I have an interesting link that I think everyone should check out and become familiar with. It is the FBI stance and taskforce on internet terrorism, which covers topics ranging from child pornography, hacking, and spamming. The FBI is very concerned with this activity (justly so) due to the fact that the internet uses telephone lines which fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission. Internet terrorism is a Federal crime, and shouldn't need to be tolerated by anyone, ever.
Coming soon is a big update with speculation about Sidious/Palpatine, Boba Fett in Ep. II, and the ever-elusive Sith and Mandalorians....WJ

12/13/98: The mainstream storyline has been updated in the Fiction section with some new quotes (taken from the wave 2 action figures). New additions and revisions to the storyline will be in this color font, to make it a bit easier to track updates. This section is itself a huge spoiler -one of the biggest. It is probably one of the most comprehensive, accurate, and up to date storyline treatments of The Phantom Menace on the Web. caution, dear readers, but if you are looking here, you probably want to know everything anyway....WJ

12/09/98: With about five and a half months 'til the release of Episode I, I thought it would be a good time to go over the changes that have occurred in fan knowledge of the storyline. If you have not already checked it out, take a look at my storyline V 1.0 -the mainstream view of the story up until about September of this year. Here is a brief summary of the major scenes or themes that have changed:

  • The opening scroll -the original opening implied that there was ages old rivalry between Naboo and Nimoudia who had been partners in a trade federation. It could be inferred that the Nimoudians made allies with the Sith to obtain possession of a certain technology: namely, cloning. The theme of a genetic flaw in both Naboo and Nimoudian races existed also.

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn (thought also to be named 'Bosh') did not appear in the beginning of the story. After the Nimoudian invasion and subsequent escape of the queen, there was a scene where the Jedi Council on Coruscant gave apprentice Knight Kenobi his final mission to become a full Jedi -to free an illegal slave population on Tatooine. He was to meet up with his old mentor, Qui-Gon Jinn, who was a local resident.

  • Anakin won R2D2 in the Pod Race, but refuses his freedom (granted by Jabba) because he does not want to be free without his mother.

  • Kenobi arrives on Tatooine aboard a Corellian YT-1300 freighter, commonly thought to be the original Millenium Falcon. He and Jinn engage in a 'playful' lightsaber duel.

  • The two Jedi perform a 'raid' on Jabba's slave quarters. Jinn specifically seeks out Anakin, which leads Kenobi to suspect that the freedom of the slaves may have been a cover operation to get the boy. The Jedi fight a Krayt Dragon, and rescue JarJar Binks from its clutches. Shmi Skywalker is unable to escape and her future is uncertain.

  • Originally I had Maul defeating Jinn in the duel on Naboo, but eventually taking his own life instead of being killed by Kenobi -in keeping with his Japanese theme (kabuki makeup, samurai-like clothes, ritual suicide called seppuku or hara-kiri ).

All the above have been appended in recent months, and the storyline continues to evolve.
Make sure to take a look at an interesting article from the 80's called 'Clone Wars Explained'. It gives a little insight on the Star Wars fandom a decade or so ago....WJ

12/05/98: I have updated the Logic section with some explanations about why some of the things that occur in The Phantom Menace actually happen. There is some explanation as to certain character motivations, and why particular phrases have a significant meaning (this section will expand over time). This is all speculation on my part of course, and I would like to hear any opinions you have on it. If you think I am full of crap, let me know, and you agree tell me also.
I am currently working on a new section of this site which should be very interesting as time goes on, with a lot of room for reader contribution to make it grow....WJ

12/02/98: Just a quick note for today. Sorry about the gap between updates recently, things have been a little hectic lately with work and school and finals coming up, etc...
JediNet reported something I found very interesting today. It would seem the big 'scoop' that some other websites are jumping on is the possibility that the odd red and black geometric pattern covering Darth Maul's face may be in fact Sith hieroglyphs or symbols. This is very interesting, since I have maintained that is what they are for months now! In my mainstream storyline of The Phantom Menace in my Fiction section there is an archive link, for the mainstream story version 1.0 -the one fans believed for a long while. In it, among several interesting (and incorrect) oddities, you can find my reference to the Sith hieroglyph pattern on Maul's face. What inspired me to state this originally? Well, it was in fact the section on Coruscant on The Official Star Wars Website. At the end of the second paragraph describing the Imperial Palace, it says that parts of the architecture were engineered by The Emperor himself on patterns based on Sith hieroglyphs. I thought it was a cool idea to combine the two concepts. Was I right? Well, I don't know, but that is not the point, really.
My next update should be pretty informative and hopefully interesting. I plan on updating the Logic section with explanations of pieces from my Fiction section. It would seem everyone knows what happens in The Phantom Menace, but there are not many explanations as to why.
Don't hesitate to let me know your opinion on me, my site, or my theories! Next update soon (I promise)....WJ

11/29/98: In conjunction with the release of pictures the wave one action figures (on Sir Steve's Guide), I have significantly changed the look, layout and content of my Gallery section. Please check it out, as it now includes information and bios on most of the major characters in The Phantom Menace.
As we get closer to the release of the film, we start to realize that we still don't know many basic things about it. The Padmé/Amidala relationship seemed easy at first, but it is not quite as cut and dried when one considers the bio information on the back of the action figure package.
I have further updated and streamlined the story treatment in my Fiction section accordingly with the new quotes from the film inserted into their logical place. The Forum has also been updated with some clarification on the Jinn/Sidious issue....WJ

11/26/98 (happy turkey day): Well, the latest controversy has been revolving around the release of the Original Trilogy Special Editions on DVD in the Spring of 1999, and that is all well and good but not too exciting.
George Lucas has commented on the warm reception of the trailer by the public on the Official Web site, and has additionally released a small amount of information about Episode II (though most of that was already known or suspected).
There is some excellent speculation in the Forum concerning Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Sidious and Darth Maul. Is Palpatine the senator of Naboo? Everyone has made it a foregone conclusion from the start, but there is no confirmation of this anywhere. In fact, from the official site is seems more likely that he is the Senator of Tatooine. Is Darth Sidious the 'phantom menace' of the film's title? From the beginning, Sidious has been described as being, well...almost exactly like the Emperor in the original trilogy. I have seen a picture of what supposedly is a prototype action figure of this character, and it also looked exactly like the Emperor (hood, robes, etc.). If this guy is indeed pulling the strings, Palpatine either works for him at the beginning of the saga, or is him (which has also been rumored). Now eventually he dumps his Senator persona all together (if they are one and the same), or he takes over Darth Sidious' role, either because Sidious wills it or because Palpatine becomes powerful enough on his own.
I mentioned once in the past the four possibilities of Anakin's father:

  • His father is 'good' (i.e. Qui-Gon Jinn/ Kane Skywalker) and was not aware of his existence
  • His father is 'bad' (Darth Maul/ Darth Sidious/ Palpatine) and stuck him on Tatooine
  • He is the result of some mysterious 'virgin birth'
  • His father is of no damn importance whatsoever

I am currently leaning toward the theory that Darth Maul may have been his father. What is the source of all the anger, fear, and aggression that the Jedi Council senses? Most people thought that it was when Qui-Gon dragged him off Tatooine and away from his mother, but that theory has changed in recent months. He must have an original trace of darkness in him leaving him extremely susceptible to the Dark Side. Then again, when you check the Forum, you might find another explanation of this all together....WJ

11/22/98: It seems like speculation almost doesn't exist anymore in the prequel universe; do we really think we know everything there is to know...?
Well, dammit, I still have a little speculation left in me, cause there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

Is Darth Maul present aboard the Trade Federation flagship in orbit around Naboo at the beginning of the film? More importantly, what is Maul's primary mission? Is it to capture/kill the Young Queen of Naboo, or does Maul's first appearance come later, on Tatooine? We know he appears on Tatooine, and Liam Neeson's character engages him in combat. There are really two possibilities: Maul arrived on Tatooine in pursuit of the Young Queen who eluded him on Naboo, or Maul arrived to claim Anakin, and Kenobi and company were there by coincidence. I am not sure which I think is correct. My first opinion is that Maul arrived to claim the potentially powerful Anakin for the Sith before the Jedi got to him. However, I think it is too much of a stretch that the Queen of Naboo coincidentally is there, and the Jedi council decides not to train Anakin anyway. So that leaves Maul pursuing the Queen. This begs the question, how did the Queen originally escape Maul in the first place, and how did Maul track her to Tatooine?

It seems that Queen Amidala takes the disguise as a handmaiden or commoner, known as Padme. It is not clear whether a real handmaiden takes her place, but this seems plausible, considering all the makeup and ornamentation she wears (very easy to disguise someone else w/o too much notice). If this imposter is brought before Maul, how long does it take for him to realize she is an imposter? Once he does, he somehow finds out her destination is Tatooine -either a really good guess or more likely he is somehow informed.

Upon further reflection, it seems very clear from the trailer that Qui-Gon is most concerned with Anakin ("Anakin, tell them to take off!") At least that is the impression I get. Maul appears at the end of the film to duel both Kenobi and Jinn. So Maul either follows them to Coruscant and then to Naboo (unlikely) or returns to Naboo to lay a trap for them. It would seem logical that Anakin would be left on Coruscant while Jinn, Kenobi, etc. traveled back to Naboo. Anakin more than likely 'stows away'. If this is the case, any info coming from Coruscant (i.e. from Palpatine) would suggest Anakin was to remain on the Galactic Capital. This line of thinks would point to Maul being in pursuit of Queen Amidala, because she is the one returning to her home, and this is the information Maul has to work with.

My next update will cover speculation concerning Palpatine and the mysterious Darth Sidious, the father of Anakin and several other unanswered questions....WJ

11/19/98: Just a quick update. Check out the Forum where there is a lot of good feedback. Keep it coming! Let me know your thoughts and opinions on the trailer, my site, and anything else. Don't forget to check out my Episode One storyline -the most complete and up to date storyline treatment on the Web (imvho). Much more very soon....WJ

11/17/98(a day that will live in infamy...):
It is all true! The leaked trailer description from Dark Horizons is 100% exactly dead on accurate! I saw the trailer for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace tonight twice, before and after the Waterboy. I will not go into the whole thing, since the description already on the net is exactly scene for scene it. Here are my impressions of the whole deal, however:
I left work and proceeded directly to school in order to take a test. After moving quickly through that nonsense, I proceeded at a high rate of speed to the only theater in town showing the trailer. Already there were people jockeying for position. I secured three tickets, one for me and my two buddies about an hour and a half before the nine PM showing of the Waterboy. About 45 minutes before the movie, the geeks started filing in in dribs and drabs. Single guys, in twos and threes, absolutely no girls. The EP I one sheet (poster) was there, and they were venerating it like the Shroud of Turin. As I waited for my friends to arrive, more fat guys in trenchcoats, preppy Orientals and eventually even some nerdette chicks made their way in. Finally my friends showed up about 12 'til, and we proceeded into the theater.
The lights dimmed and immediately the Lucasfilm logo appeared, much to the joy of the assembled mass. My overall impression...it was excellent. Liam Neeson seemed like the total cool dude. The overhead shot of Theed on Naboo was incredible, extremely complex with waterfalls in the distant background. JarJar looked really good, but it is clear they are still having problems with computer-generated clothing on computer-generated characters. It is also clear that he is the main comic relief. The pod race looks to be a major scene in the movie, one that I am sure will be long remembered. Darth Maul looks like a total bad-ass, and no, he does not look like Ewan McGregor. The double-bladed lightsaber is way too cool. The space dogfight sequence was utterly Star Wars, and the sound effects were all there. The queen's ship looks almost exactly like an all chrome SR-71 Blackbird, and Natalie Portman has some very wild make-up; yes, a geisha-like appearance. Yoda surprised me, however. He pretty much looked like he did in ESB, and he ran through his little speech about fear and hate in a hurried fashion. And yes, sports fans, at the end of the trailer appeared:

wpe3.jpg (11729 bytes)

Yes, this is exactly what appeared, the GD title is The Phantom Menace! End of discussion.
Whew, well, I will comment more in my next update, and I will be working on the storyline in my Fiction section to reflect some of the feeling I got from seeing the trailer in all its glory. Let me know what you think about the trailer, and my assessment of things. T minus 6 months and counting....WJ

11/15/98: It is gonna be The Waterboy and it is gonna be 9:00 PM on Tuesday the 17th. The only theater that is showing it in my city was one that was recently constructed over this summer. Also cool is that it happens to be within 15 minutes of my place of residence. I am gonna go there tomorrow and try to reserve a ticket for Tuesday, I hope it is not too late. Even if it is, I am confident I will see the trailer anyway, one way or another...
Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning I will post my reaction to this long-anticipated event, and the reaction of the theater crowd as well.
If it is true that Lucas and/or Fox bought 12 minutes worth of air time during the Super Bowl, I suppose that is roughly a 24 million dollar investment. Money well spent I think, considering the film will make more than the national debt of some third world nations.
The Forum has been updated, and my Gallery is being revamped....WJ

11/12/98: Well, it is finally time to comment on all this wonderful and amazing prequel stuff that has been going on. I knew it would be an exercise in futility to attempt to keep up with all the other sites (who have apparently been in some kind of race) to cross-post pictures of things. I knew it would be better to sit back, take it all in, and comment on the situation when the furor died down (plus, I've been really busy...)
It looks like I can finally believe some of the rumors to be officially true even though they are not on the Official Site. These would be:

  • Qui-Gon Jinn

  • Darth Maul (and his appearance + double ended lightsaber)

  • JarJar Binks

  • Padme Naberrie

  • Gungans

  • Anakin's slave status

  • JarJar's outcast status

I truly like the one-sheet and poster displayed for The Phantom Menace; simple, effective, and original. The conspiracy-minded masses who seem to think that The Phantom Menace is not the real title should stick to watching the X-files. It is not on the poster yet because Lucas and Fox does not want to confuse the average movie-goer. People recognize the shadow of Darth Vader, they make the connection that the little boy is him, and then they see 'Episode One'. Perfect.
Here are some unanswered questions now that defy all attempts at espionage:

  • Darth Sidious

  • The Nimoudians

  • Reasons behind the invasion of Naboo

  • the Sith

  • the Amidala/Padme deal

  • the reason for landing on Tatooine

  • the motivation of Darth maul: is he after Padme or after Anakin?

  • who dies? Jinn? Maul? both? neither?!!

  • why the council refuses to train Anakin

I have discovered a worthy cause online in the Star Wars universe. Try to name a character from any of the original trilogy that has not been made into an action figure.... give up?
Porkins! The first hero of the battle of Yavin! The man too brave to eject when told! Support this noble cause by visiting Porkin's Central at Red 6 run by Matt and Brett Lowry. Sign the petition to get Porkins immortalized in plastic!

The trailer is just a short week away! Can you believe it? I still need to find a movie I actually might want to see....WJ

11/08/98: The picture of the trailer at the America's Queen site has been removed, apparently due to all the ruckus it has been causing. Was/is it the real deal? My opinion is yes. If it was a forgery, it was a masterful one. It was hard to tell what JarJar truly looked like, but the character did seem to be actually physically in the picture. Cool. We also got to see Liam Neeson, finally, in a shot other than the logo on the official site. He looks pretty different with his hair and beard that way, but I am digging it. Definitely an air of authority about him.
I suppose I will have to find a movie I might marginally like to see as an excuse to see the trailer. I will also be interested in gauging crowd reaction in the theater I am in. Will they freak like I will want to, or will they just sit there? We shall see. Forum has been updated with some good points about Darth Maul and various religious overtones. Logic and Fact have been updated as well, and the mainstream storyline in the Fiction section continues to be streamlined as well....WJ

11/06/98: It is official. The trailer for The Phantom Menace will debut on November 20. All over America, attached to no particular film. Two minutes long. This is it. Also, we may have our first ever look at Qui-Gon and JarJar, unless this pic at Natalie Portman: America's Queen is a tremendous fake. More later....WJ

11/04/98: What an exciting few days it has been in the prequel universe! Episode 2 and 3 have been announced to be filmed in Australia, new toys and action figures are being released, and the inevitability of the trailer is now almost painful! But I have not gotten a thing in my inbox since the 29th! C'mon guys, with so much going on I know you want to talk about it. Fiction has been updated with the new revised Phantom Menace storyline treatment. Please check it out, you will not be disappointed. I can say with total confidence that this treatment is the most comprehensive, up to date, and accurate Episode I storyline on the world wide web at this moment. Notice I did not say it was the real script, it is simply the most accurate treatment based on popular rumor. Let me know what you think on my Feedback page. Rank my site, sign my guestbook or e-mail me. I will respond to all in the Forum....WJ

10/30/98: Mr. Jennings has both personally and publicly apologized for his irresponsible behavior, and has removed my Updates page from his server. I am not the type to hold a grudge, so I will comment no further on the matter. Apology accepted.
More and more sources are making the claim that the Episode One trailer description that has been in the news lately is authentic. it seems that if this is true, some new information can be gleaned from this.
I have always had a little problem with a good explanation for the whole "Tatooine " sequence. The majority of individuals who know anything about the story have believed up to this point that Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi live as slaves in the city of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine. They are most likely slaves of Jabba the Hutt, or an underling of his named Watto. Qui-Gon Jinn by chance comes across Anakin and his powerful Force abilities. Anakin wins an illegal pod race and earns his freedom from slavery. Jinn wants the boy to leave Tatooine but he does not want to leave his mother. Circumstances occur (usually presented as a 'raid' on the slave quarters by Jinn and Kenobi) which cause them to take Anakin from his mother, who is usually thought to be injured, captured or killed. This is one of the causes of the tremendous rage within Anakin...

This has never quite made sense to me, so I think I have worked out (from various sources) what the true sequence of motivations are:
The party (Jinn, 'Padme', Kenobi, JarJar, Captain Panaka and R2) arrive on Tatooine; why exactly they arrive here is unclear. Because of damage to their ship? (this much seems obvious) Is it because it is the only planet they can make it to? Does Jinn or Kenobi have a specific reason for going there? If they could have made it to Coruscant they would have right from the start, so they were damaged badly.
Naboo most likely is one of the outer rim planets if this is the case, coupled with the fact that The Federation moved in on this planet.
One of the party (Jinn more than likely) comes across Anakin. This is usually described as a fight where Anakin uses the Darkside unwittingly. Anakin and his mother are slaves of Jabba the Hutt, his mother is [some position which would greatly benefit from having the help of a protocol droid]. Jinn wants to take the boy to the Jedi Temple, and Shmi want him to go also, but Anakin is indentured to Jabba. However, a pod race is occurring where the winner is granted emancipation (ensures good competition). This can solve several things at once. Jinn is confidant Anakin can win. To make sure his pod is in top shape, he has R2 and JarJar help him with it, and he goes and places a bet on Anakin, hoping that he can purchase the repairs needed for their own ship with the funds. Nobody seems to ask Anakin about this, however.
Anakin wins the race and is granted his freedom, but is unwilling to leave. He and his mother have a tearful goodbye. Now is where it gets tricky, because this Darth Maul guy appears. Here is a question I have had for a while -is Darth Maul after Padme or Anakin? We hear about him being present at the beginning of the Naboo invasion but there is no real proof of that. There is a lot of evidence that his first appearance is on Tatooine where he battles Jinn. Another thing I can't quite figure out is the Amidala/Padme thing. I am pretty sure that Amidala is disguised as a handmaiden named Padme to escape capture or something, but is there a real handmaiden that is sacrificed? When does the Federation /Darth Maul/Darth Sidious uncover this deception? I am working on integrating all of these new elements into my storyline treatment, and hope to have it up soon as possible. The Forum has been updated.  Happy Halloween (yes, even to you Mr. Jennings)....WJ

10/27/98: Jordan Jennings from nerf-herder.com has just designed a very interesting prequel section. Please, go take a look at it right this moment.... Anything look familiar? Mr. Jennings, along with several other individuals from different prequel sites have made me offers over the weekend via e-mail to become affiliated with their teams. Before I could respond to Mr. Jennings properly, I decided to take a look at what he has to offer, and lo and behold.....I see my site. Except it's not my site...it seems to be his now....
I can't remember the last time I was this angry. This person blatantly presented this page as his prequel section without my knowledge or authorization! How presumptuous and irresponsible! I have written Mr. Jennings and expressed my anger about this matter, including insisting on the removal of the link to my site. I would like a public apology, but frankly do not expect one. I will update again very soon concerning some new matters including my new affiliate when I cool off from this mess....WJ

10/25/98: Dark Horizons has what is seemingly the latest and greatest in prequel scoops -a description of the trailer for The Phantom Menace. But of course, as usual, it does not tell us anything we have not already deduced and stated already. There are some particulars (specifically, bits of dialogue) which have many people claiming with confidence that this is the real deal. That trailer description could (in my opinion) have been written by anyone who has read my storyline treatment and is reasonably familiar with the universe of prequel rumors. The only new thing that the source of this trailer claims is that 'The Phantom Menace' is not the actual title (groan.....) Oh yeah, the actual words 'Star Wars' are written in a different font. Oh please... Perhaps I am being too harsh, and this actually is a scoop. We'll see shortly, now, won't we. The Forum has been updated along with some new refinements to the mainstream storyline in my Fiction section....WJ

10/20/98: Ain't It Cool News has had a lot of prequel activity the last couple of days. Now the question is: can we trust any of it? Harry Knowles dropped the big prequel bomb a couple months ago with his claim of seeing the Episode One script, albeit the 3rd revised draft. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the net about this event, and many concepts of the mainstream storyline idea were revised (reflected on my fiction page, with the prevailing storyline up to that point archived).
Now Knowles is claiming his spy buddies knows all about JarJar and have laid their hands on a bunch of official toys and merchandise. It would seem that according to recent 'news' that has been unearthed over the last couple weeks, almost all the stuff about the Prequels from way way back when has been basically correct. That seems kinda weird to me...
What everyone seems to be overlooking is actual important stuff that no one has any answers for. Everything we have heard up to this point, with the exception of the title of the film, we have heard in one form or another for months. Everyone just seems to be confirming things. Did we find it all out from the get-go?
We know none of the script, despite claims like, "cool, wizard!" and "you have lost".
We have seen nothing computer generated or enhanced.
No music composed specifically for the film has been heard, nor any sound effects.
We can only speculate about all the politically intriguing motivations for all the actions in the film.
We cannot know who the true villain of the story is. Not yet.

Plenty of surprises left, dontcha think? The Forum has been updated....WJ

10/18/98: I refuse to link to that site (you know which one I mean) since I am sure you are all sick of seeing it on every other prequel site. But the pictures there are pretty fantastic. The first production pictures of characters in The Phantom Menace, and apparent confirmation of the name Amidala for Natalie Portman's character. We also get to see Obi-Wan and Anakin together (seemingly on Naboo) dispelling the rumor that they might not meet until the second film. Apparently Anakin is in fact brought before the Jedi Council. However, we still do not know if Palpatine is the Senator of Naboo and we have nothing on Liam Neeson's character and nothing hard on JarJar except for some pictures of what may be prototype action figures. Many of these unanswered questions remain. The next logical step is to get some production photos of some CG elements, which is what the real security is about at Lucasfilm. The new sound-system rumor is actually a fact. It seems there is a Dolby/THX system to be made available to theaters at the time of release next May. What I am truly curious about is the Official website. When is it going to updated to reflect all these changes in the prequel universe? The title, pictures of characters, names , creatures and droids, etc. The Forum has also been updated....WJ

10/13/98: The Star Wars Insider #40 is out. As has come to be expected lately, there is nothing really new in it except for very nice pictures of things we are already familiar with (like the Trade Federation Battle Droid).
The controversy rages on about the title of Episode One. I personally think we had all best get used to it 'cause it is here to stay. If you look at Star Wars as the title for the whole saga, and A New Hope as the title of Episode Four it makes perfect sense. It is exactly like an old time Hollywood space cowboy serial. I would like to think I was more on the right track than some of the other title hunters with some of my speculations (seen here).
The Forum has also been updated with a good question....WJ

10/09/98: Sorry about the lack of punctuality but I have had some real-world business to attend to (you know how it is). It seems like we are in the midst of a prequel anti-climax, does it not? We know the name of the film, it seems like we know the entire plot, we know the actors, the apparent name of the characters, and even what the damn action figures look like. There are no more surprises left. Right?
Well, we don't quite know everything... Basically, everything that we do know about the film can be found on my Fact page. Let's figure out what still remains a mystery (phantom mystery? sorry...)

  • Who is Anakin's father

  • What is the name of Liam Neeson's character

  • Who is Darth Sidious

  • What becomes of Anakin's mother, Shmi

  • Is Anakin originally a slave

  • What is the relationship between 'Padme' and 'Amidala'

  • Is the Young Queen actually the Queen of Naboo

  • Is Palpatine actually the senator of Naboo

  • What main character/s die in the film

  • Are there a species called Nimoudians

Not quite as clear as we may have thought. There are plenty more unconfirmed things out there, let me know if you think of any more....WJ

10/04/98: I think there has been a problem with Hotmail recently, or at least my account. The last few mails I got disappeared after I read them, and before I could post them. I got one from Master Xizor at Black Sun and one from someone who told me they didn't like my page transitions. Anyone else not care for them? I like constructive criticism as well as compliments, so let me know if something is on your mind.
Not much news lately, except for the Mace Windu and STAP and Battle Droid action figures. The Official site has been updated with some mildly interesting stuff. I have been considering joining a web ring, but I am not sure which one is a really good one to join. If any of you have a suggestion please let me know.
Don't forget to check out the Forum, which has been updated....WJ

10/01/98: Well, it is October already and there are 233 days ''til the release of The Phantom Menace. Just think, no matter what else happens, we will be seeing the teaser trailer for the movie within the next 60-90 days. There is a rumor about Lucas premiering a new THX/Dolby joint venture sound system, but I am a little doubtful, not to mention not really interested.
Ki-Adi-Mundi.jpg (3769 bytes)Ki-Adi-Mundi is starring in his own comic book it would seem. Ki-Adi-Mundi, for those of you unfamiliar, is a rumored Jedi Master (now confirmed) who is suppose to be quite a kick-*ss character. I mentioned that I was going to get the Behind the Magic CD; well, I did. It is really very cool -much more comprehensive than I expected and very well done. The prequel section was small, but had some good info and pictures. It also gave the impression that Captain Panaka, the young queen's head of security, is an important character....WJ.

09/27/98: I suppose by now the shock has worn off and we are all starting to accept The Phantom Menace as the title. Or are we?
Personally, I like it. It is very clear that Lucas is trying to recapture the glory of old Hollywood serials with the look of the movie, the theme of the opening scrolls and having six episodes. The title The Phantom Menace seems to fall right in with this thinking.
Many are wondering if this is a trick title, like Blue Harvest or Revenge Of The Jedi. I don't think Lucas would authorize the webmasters at the official site to put this up unless it was the real title currently slated for release. Can it change? Of course it can, but I do not think it is part of a grand deceptive plan.
My Gallery has many very choice pictures but there was a problem during upload and so my thumbnail links are broken. It will be fixed shortly however. The Forum section has also been updated....WJ

09/25/98 (second update):

"Star Wars: Episode I
-- The Phantom Menace"

You heard it here first! It has officially been announced that this is the title of Episode One!!!! Wow, what a stunner! It sounds kind of like the name of one of those old-time serials like Flash Gordon and stuff. I will further update and comment on this later. Whew....WJ

09/25/98: Surprise!! See anything different? There are some fantastic things going on in the Star Wars® universe and in conjunction with the release of the Star Wars: Behind the Magic CD I have introduced The Whill Journal Version 3.0!
Please bookmark this page as the new updates section. From here I will be letting all of you know of any changes or other occurrences on this site and in the prequel universe in general. Please browse through all of my reorganized sections -the Gallery and Fiction pages are especially good (imho....)
All mail and guest book commentary will now be posted in the Forum, with my reply, and will be open to all input. Please let me know what you think! Does it suck? Is it cool? Who cares? Let me know however you feel, and tell your friends who might like to learn a little about Episode One to check this site out....WJ

09/20/98: I have been playing around with a couple other possible titles for Episode One. I feel that the 'working title' of The Beginning is actually rather plausible, if not a little blasé... Birth Of A Jedi  The Dawn Of The Future  The Birth Of The Future  The Rise Of A Warrior   The Son Of The Sun  Hope Of The Future  The Dawn Of The Fall...
The Son Of The Sun is actually a reference to Luke I think, but still sounds really cool.

Maybe Anakin's father is Palpatine. Political figures throughout history have often fathered illegitimate children, and then tried to stash them away in some remote location (Tatooine?). If that was the case with Anakin, it would mean that Vader trying to recruit Luke to "rule the galaxy as father and son" would be a continuation of some sick, twisted family tradition.. (Source: storm8)

That is a good thought. I thought maybe Palpatine was Obi-Wan's father due to the "connection" listed on the official site. It is necessary to come up with a reason for Anakin having a 'famous father' while living in seeming poverty. There are several ways it can be explained:

  • His father is 'good' (i.e. Qui-Gon Jinn/ Kane Skywalker) and is not aware of his existence
  • His father is 'bad' (Darth Maul/ Darth Sidious/ Palpatine) and stuck him there
  • He is the result of some mysterious 'virgin birth'
  • His father is of no damn importance whatsoever

I am looking forward to getting my hands on the Behind The Magic CD, I hope it will be worth the hype....WJ

09/18/98: I have not heard anything or read anything regarding the X-files rumor, therefore I officially deem it bullcrap just as I had originally thought.
What type of title can convey the true meaning of Episode One? A New Hope was about Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin, becoming the new hope for the galaxy after the fall of the Republic by the hand of the Emperor. The Empire Strikes Back was about Vader's temptation of Luke and the possibility of losing Luke to the Darkside. Return Of The Jedi was about the redemption and 'return' of Anakin Skywalker from the figurative dead as he recants the Darkside and kills the Emperor to save his son's life. Well, what is Episode One about?
The whole story is about Anakin. Anakin's discovery by the Jedi. Anakin's rise and marriage. Anakin's fall and the birth of his children. The discovery of Anakin's son. The confrontation between Anakin and his son. The redemption of Anakin by his son. Specifically the first film will be about the beginning of the end of the Republic. The beginning of Palpatine's rise to power. The initiation of Anakin to the path of his destiny...
The entire saga are the Star Wars, viewed as past history from the Journal of the Whills. The story of the galaxy is also a mirror to Anakin. destiny   future  fate  the beginning of the circle  the path  the fate of Anakin and company  the future of the galaxy  the hand of the emperor...

  • The {Hand/Dawn/Beginning/Rise/Path} Of {Fate/Destiny/Future}
  • The Hand Of Fate, The Hand Of Destiny
  • The Dawn Of Fate, The Dawn Of Destiny, The Dawn Of The Future
  • The Beginning of Destiny
  • The Rise Of Destiny, The Rise Of The Future
  • The Path Of Fate, The Path Of Destiny, The Path Of The Future

The Hand Of Fate
The Hand Of Destiny
The Dawn Of Fate
The Path Of Fate
The Dawn Of Destiny

I think one of these five titles are quite representative of Episode One. Any of them sound good?

09/15/98: I have received an anonymous email from a source claiming that 'something brief' about Episode One will be appearing sometime during the season premiere of The X-files. When I got this mail, I just kind of looked at it. My site is growing (a little) but it is still way too small to have someone post something like this to me first before posting it to one of the bigger sites. I say this 'cause I checked them all out to see if anything about it was out there, and there was not. Normally I would dismiss this outright, but I am posting it here to see if anyone has heard anything about this.
I am mildly intrigued by this possibility because:

  1. The X-files is a big thing with 20th Century Fox
  2. there were lots of rumors about a 'trailer' before the movie
  3. the season premiere will be in November
  4. lots and lots of people will be watching it
  5. it has been proven there is no typical (i.e. nerd) X-files fan

What am I getting at? Well, I'm not sure.... Do I believe this info? No, I don't think I do. Am I intrigued by the logical possibility of it? A little. If Lucas decided to run a prequel 'thing' during the season premiere of The X-files he would have a huge and diverse audience. The possibility has also crossed my mind that the reason so many people thought a trailer was gonna be out with the movie may be 'cause they heard the wrong thing (season premiere, not movie). Also, Lucas and company have stated that a trailer will be out in November or December. Somebody please let me know if there is anything to this.
The Official site has been updated, but nothing earth-shattering (as usual....)....WJ

09/13/98: I have posted my updated Mainstream Storyline Version 2.0, and placed the original storyline in an archive accessible on the original page. It still needs a couple tweaks here and there, but it is complete for the most part. Compare the two versions and you will see that many events are the same, but in a different order. The beginning is very different, however, and so are the majority of the Tatooine sequences. My scanner should be running again soon so I can post more pictures and articles.

I think the most logical way for Lucas and company to show Anakin's turn to the Darkside is to show events in his life that may have left him susceptible. Anakin is meant as a tragic figure, a man starting out good but due to circumstance being bent into a twisted and evil shadow of his true self. His separation from his mother is a potential source of anger, as well as the possible identity of his true father. Another plot point which has been speculated about quite frequently is a possible love affair between Obi-Wan and Anakin's wife Amidala. But most assuredly, The Emperor has the most to do with his fateful turn. A clone of Anakin by the name of Vader killing the original Anakin is a very very interesting bit of speculation. It has been mentioned before, but usually dismissed. No one truly knows what the Clone Wars are about, but as far as I know it goes something like this:

Palpatine gets his hands on the DNA of an ancient (now extinct) race of super-warriors known as the Mandalorians. Using cloning technology developed by his home planet Naboo (in an attempt to correct a genetic flaw) he clones an army of super-commandos and lets them loose against Republic targets to draw the Jedi out into battle. This serves the Senator in several ways. In one fell swoop Palpatine:

  • starts a war which makes the current leaders of the Republic look weak and ineffectual
  • kills many Jedi
  • promises to lead Republic forces to victory if given the chance
  • since he is in control of the Mandalorian forces and many Sith forces, he orchestrates a victory thereby getting himself elected Chancellor of the Galactic Senate
  • declares martial law throughout the galaxy and takes direct control of the military
  • sparks the idea of cloning Jedi (which he knows the Jedi will refuse) turning public opinion against the order

The rest, as they say, is history. The real question is how he gets his claws into Anakin. Most likely through lies and subterfuge he confuses Anakin into becoming his servant. What do you think? Please let me know and we can speak on this....WJ

09/09/98: Hey! Where is everybody?! I know you're out there, I can hear you breathing! Seriously, I can see from my hit tracking that I get a fairly consistent number of hits over a given period of time, but nobody is writing to me. Have ya nuthin ta say? I enjoy so much when I get feedback and can comment on it and/or respond to it. I was doing okay for a while, but have received nothing recently. Talk to me people!
It is nice to see Dark Side Prequel Rumors up and running again. They had been gone but not forgotten. I have been working when I can on a massively updated version of the mainstream storyline. It is a daunting task, collecting all the new 'revelations' out there and assembling them into a framework. A lot easier to just post disjointed bits...
The usually chaotic prequel world has been quite sedate recently, one can only hope it is the calm before a storm. I will have the new storyline all worked out hopefully by my next update. Write me! WJ

09/04/98: I guess Naboo has been confirmed by Lucasfilm. Although there are many domain names registered by Lucasfilm, that does not mean they are necessarily of any significance. But recently www.naboo.com has had a strange little swamp scene with a link to a page that seems to be part of the official site. This would appear to confirm Naboo (pronounced Nay-boo) as a location with a swamp. I had a thought the other day which just came to me from the clear blue. What if Darth Maul is Anakin's father? Let's think about this a moment:

  • Anakin and his mother Shmi live in relative poverty in a hovel on Tatooine
  • Anakin is extremely strong with the Force
  • His father is a mystery
  • Jinn and/or Kenobi have motivation to bring Anakin into the Jedi fold
  • His mother (apparently) is apprehensive after Anakin discloses he and Qui-Gon spoke
  • Jinn is described as having a 'shade of grey' perspective on the Force
  • Anakin is separated from his mother
  • Qui-Gon and Maul supposedly duel on Tatooine
  • Maul is evidently killed at the hands of a Jedi on Naboo
  • Events transpire in Anakin's life which predispose him to the Dark Side
  • There is a reason why Yoda refuses to train Anakin

Everyone assumes that Anakin's father was a Jedi, but who says that he was a good one? I admit it is a huge stretch, but so what. Do you think that Darth is a contraction for Dark Lord of the Sith? Dar'th? The old rumor that there can only be two Darths, or Dark Lords of the Sith at any given time (Master and Apprentice) has risen again, and for some reason this time it does not sound as stupid. Tell me what you think....WJ

09/01/98: I want to restate here what is on my index page concerning the purpose of this site:
"Hello, and welcome to the Whill Journal. There is much anticipation leading up to the release of the next Star Wars movie, Episode 1. Accordingly, many "prequel" sites have sprung up on the Internet; some good, some not so good. There are many common reports, pictures and themes to be seen on most of them. While I am a fan of this speculation, and think some of it is correct, the purpose of this site is to cover exactly what we do know. It is apparent to me that a large group of fans can begin to believe in their own self-perpetuating rumors more than the actual facts as they are presented."
I felt I needed to post this here, more for my sake than any of yours. I teetered on losing my objectivity yesterday, wrapped up in the apparent 'revelations'. But I think I caught myself before I let it get too far. I have nothing against Harry Knowles or AICN, but upon sober reflection this may have been leaked info. My mainstream storyline may be changed to reflect popular thinking, but the whole point of that section is to show the fiction that is the current idea of truth. There has been a new update on The Official Site and it is not as impressive as 'seeing the script', but it is unequivocally the absolute truth. This site is moving toward a story assembled from all the facts and my best judgement. Help me out with your best judgement....WJ

08/31/98 (second update): I am back from work at my new job, and it is pretty cool. How about that Harry Knowles at AICN? Did he just reinvent himself like a 400 lb. male Madonna? Everybody and their mother slammed the hell out of that guy yesterday when some stupid rumor was posted on his site about a prequel delay. They all called him a bunch of names and called him fat*ss and told him he sucked and stuff, but then today this dude lays what may be tha prequel bomb on us all. I have no idea if this report is real, but for some reason I think it is (at least partly). So what does this mean? Well, I'm not sure....
No one seems to take this guy seriously anymore and no other prequel sites have really commented on it. If he is correct, however, it seems that Roderick Vonhögen's Virtual Edition has the closest storyline to the actual one. I am not going to modify my storyline until I find out some additional commentary and possible cooberation -after all, it is supposed to be the mainstream storyline. It would seem that the first version of the Episode 1 trailer will be found on the Star Wars: Behind The Magic CD ROM to be released this September.
Also please be sure to check out The Coruscant Cafe....WJ

08/31/98 (first update): Check out Ain't It Cool News! I am off to work but I had to get this in. I will comment on the info later in the day....WJ

08/29/98: Major possible spoiler material has been released on JediNet. These are supposed prototypes of Amidala, Anakin, Padme, Obi-Wan, Darth Maul, and Qui-Gon. There really is no way to confirm this, but it looks like the real deal. What does this mean? Well, if it is true then Padme and Amidala are not the same person. Either that, or they made two action figures of Natalie Portman, one as Amidala and one as Padme. The other thing this would confirm is all the descriptions of Darth Maul. The horn arrangement pattern on his head is a little different, but otherwise it would seem that all the portrayals have been accurate. The Force.Net has also released a purported picture of a Battle Droid figure. I have been attempting to deduce the reason for Senator Palpatine secretly supporting the Trade Federation/Sith attack on the Young Queen's world since my question to Vespon at Dark Side Prequel Rumors. Here is a potential solution: yes, Palpatine does in fact have access to the cloning technology -that is part of his plan. He is the one that actually revealed the details of the technology to the Nimoudians. The reason he is (secretly) supporting the attack on Naboo is basically a political move to destabilize the Galactic Senate. Check this theory out...all sources so far seem to say that Senator Palpatine asks for only a small force of Jedi and that this confuses the Young Queen. Perhaps this is incorrect and he actually double-crosses the Trade Federation and calls for a large force which he knows will defeat them. Chancellor Valorum is the one that actually calls for the small force, as he is more of the traditional "pacifist". It is with this "bold" move that Palpatine almost single-handedly moves into the Chancellery. When the Jedi and Republic forces show up at the end to engage the Trade Federation, the Sith forces take off into hyperspace and leave the Nimoudians up sh*t creek. This would seem to be a little more plausible and would be more in Palpatine's deceptive, self-serving nature. Then Palpatine would be the "hero of the Battle of Naboo", right? Tell me what you think of this little pet theory. Master Xizor over at Black Sun was nice enough to make this logo for me:

TWJlogo.gif (58516 bytes)

Please go take a look at her site, it is very cool and a lot of hard work went into it....WJ

08/25/98: It seems that the word of the day is "STAP"! The Prequel Watch has a scoop on this mysterious stap.jpg (6276 bytes)vehicle. It seems to me that STAP is in fact an acronym, in the same tradition as AT-AT or AT-ST. It is a hovering gun platform used for reconnaissance and patrol flown by a single battle droid pilot. They may fill a similar role as the speeder bikes and biker scouts in ROTJ.
The Ep. 1 trailer may not reach theaters until early 1999. May 21, 1999 may not be the final release date for the prequel in North America. The date may be changed back to May 25 after it is too late for any studio to schedule a film for release during the May 21 weekend... The official budget for Ep. 1 has now surpassed $ 100 million with about 7 to 8 months of post-production remaining. The final budget will likely be in the $ 130 to $ 150 million dollar range... I.L.M. is slightly ahead of schedule, but some of the more 'sophisticated and complex' visual effects shots are not scheduled for completion until early April 1999. The entire production for Ep. 1 is scheduled to officially end bystapandb.jpg (71682 bytes) the first or second week of April 1999... Lucas is still keeping the title a closely guarded secret as he continues to polish the rough edit of the film. It has drastically changed (i.e.dialogue re-dubs) from the earlier edits that the production crew made. The changes have been made in order for Lucas' 'complete vision' to appear on film. Lucas is amazed at how seamlessly vast quantities of digital creatures/characters can be inserted into the live-action film shots... The novelization of Ep. 1 and most of the Kenner toys will be released a few days after the film's release... PepsiCo, Inc. will be marketing tons of Ep. 1 related items at Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Frito-Lays. These items will start coming out prior to the film's release date... John Williams is scheduled to begin recording the music for Ep. 1 by February 1999. The Ep. 1 soundtrack will be released a few days prior to the film's release... The comic adaptation of Ep. 1 will be released in a serialized format, most likely 4 issues with the first issue available several days before the film release... During the greatly CG-enhanced Galactic Senate scenes, alien species that have thus far only appeared in the SW novels will be seen on film for the very first time... There will be brief space-battle sequences in Ep. 1... The CG Jabba that appears on Tatooine at the beginning of Ep. 1 will be smaller than the CG Jabba that appears in the special edition of Star Wars: ANH. Thanks to Supershadow and the crew at Dark Side for keeping the world informed even while the man keeps them down!

08/22/98: Slow, slow, slow. What can I say? The silly rubber head that was supposed to be a Gungan (posted on AICN) was not even from Episode 1. This cool cat named Roderick Vonhögen found it out. There is talk of a vehicle or contraption referred to as STAP. What the hell this is I think no one knows. It may be an acronym, or an actual name of a Nimoudian vehicle. Supposedly a Battle Droid may be included with it. Another theory is DSTROYER.jpg (39265 bytes)that the STAP actually is the Hover Tank. I got the new issue of the Star Wars Insider and it is pretty decent. My scanner is temporarily down (HP ScanJet 5100c doesn't work at first when you upgrade to Win98, by the way) but I will get some new pics up soon. A cool picture has come out, however, of what may be the long rumored "destroyer droid" that has been mentioned a few places. Take a closer look by clicking on the thumbnail....WJ

08/17/98: Poor Jake Lloyd. Just a little kid and already he is being ripped apart by hundreds of internet denizens for an acting performance that has not even been seen, much less edited yet. I kinda felt the same way about Chelsea Clinton when SNL made fun of her looks when she was like 14, but I digress....
If one thinks about it, when a kid is 9 years old, is there truly a difference in acting skills? Are there 'great' child actors, and 'bad' child actors? Or do they just act like children.... I am looking forward to the Star Wars: Behind the Magic CD to be released in the near future. It sounds like it will finally be a product worth the money (I guess I am still disgruntled by Shadows of the Empire for my N64). The character that Samuel Jackson plays will be the first prequel action figure available to the public. It will end up costing consumers like $33.00 total to get the damn thing, but that's the way it is. T'Bone Fender has  what may be a model of Sebulba, and there is a picture at AICN that is rumored to possibly be a Gungan. Who knows? My Mainstream Storyline has been updated, and I think I have gotten it to the point where there are no major plot holes. Then again, I don't really believe 90% of it anyway.... WJ

08/14/98: Supershadow and the people over at Dark Side Prequel Rumors have gone out of their way to mention The Whill Journal on their site. I do not know any of them personally but they have always been great in the few dealings I've had with them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. Consequently, my traffic has gone way up in the past couple of days, but to my chagrin I have had barely any feedback at all. I am very interested in what visitors here are thinking; whether you agree, disagree, or have some wild idea all your own. Do you think my theories are on track? Could Palpatine and Kenobi be related? How is my interpretation of the storyline as we know it? This is where you can throw your two cents in.
Some intrepid web surfers have brought up a few interesting points, but nothing too big. Is it obvious "Aunt Beru" is Anakin's sister? Owen Lars is Ben Kenobi's brother, and Luke's uncle. That leaves one logical possibility, right? This idea has been kicked around by several people recently, one going specifically by the handle Rathbone. I have updated the Image Gallery, and there are lots of purty pictures there......

natarticle.jpg (23987 bytes)08/12/98: Wow, it has been busy out there. The Pepsi cans, the pick-up shoots, the "leak" of the 1st hour of the movie, news about the limited release and hiked ticket prices, etc., etc., ad nauseum.... There was kind of a cute little piece in Parade, which appears in many Sunday paper supplements. You can read it by clicking on the thumbnail. Natalie Portman nude? Well, that would be nice, but is she even legal.... Are the long-extinct Mandalorians going to be brought back through cloning? Is that how the 'Clone Wars'  come about?  Does Palpatine get his hands on some of the super-commando DNA and clone the hell out of them to get an invincible army? Let me know what you think.

pepsi.gif (167670 bytes)08/05/98: There has been a seeming flurry of activity in the Prequel universe, but most of it is speculation. The only hard facts to come out are that Episode One is to be released on May 21, 1999. That's official, and my countdown has been reflected to show it. Some additional Jedi Council Member names have popped up: Adi Gallia (a very tall female Jedi master), Depa Billaba, Eepth Koth (has 4 thick, shoulder-length tentacles hanging from the side of his head, two on each side), Sacler Eeg, Saefee Tinn ( a female Jedi with a squid-like extension(s) protruding from her head), Yarael Poof (a very tall, robed, alien creature with a thin neck and a round head and eyes). These names cannot be substantiated. Galoob and Pepsi are apparently getting their promotion engines geared up. Pictures of Prequel Pepsi cans have appeared, but these seem to me dubious, at best. They do look cool though -whoever made them.

08/05/98: Welcome to my new location! Yes I have moved my site to greener pastures, and updated and modified the look of it as well. I believe I have configured the navigation to be much more efficient, as well as adding a few things that weren't on my other location. How do you like it? Let me know on my new Feedback center. It is a little more interactive than the old one. I can only assume most readers of this post saw or heard about the Episode 1 "coverage" on Fox News the other day. Yeah, it stunk. Seems like they teamed up with Leonard Maltin. Pretty bad that these big professional news companies decide that they can literally show the Official Star Wars site on an monitor and call that a report. Not much has been happening in the prequel world, just a couple reports on some of the young queen's clothes and some prequel toys. Here is a question which I put to Vespon@ Dark Side Prequel Rumors which I am now putting to you: I have been thinking a little (god forbid) and I have kinda a big problem with one of the "mainstream story" elements..... If Palpatine is the senator of "Naboo" (or whatever the young queen's planet will be named) why does he need to support some Nimoudian/Sith attack to get the cloning technology? If he is the Senator to the Galactic Republic, I am pretty sure he would have access to all the info he might ever want on the technology. And if it is his goal to indirectly assassinate Natalie Portman's character, surely he could do it through his own channels, right? I am trying to determine his motivation for secretly supporting the attack on Naboo, but none seem to fit. Good thing I don't really think that is really part of the story, huh?(Source: Whilljournalist)

I'd like to hear your theories about this question I posed. E-mail me with your hypothesis.

07/30/98: Whilljournalist: Hi there. I guess we all wanted to slap Leonard Maltin after that weak report on Ep.1 on ET. He gets paid money to show the Star Wars web site on TV? Hmmmm...Got a good idea of exactly what Kenner has in store for us with at least the starfighter, but not a whole lot else. There are a couple of rumored confirmations about the Jedi Council. Apparently, there are a total of 12 Jedi Masters on the Council. That does NOT include Liam Neeson's character, who is not on the council, simply a lone Jedi Master who was supposedly once a member. Plo Koon -As mentioned before, the "cool" Jedi character. Yaddle -the younger Yoda like creature. Ki Adi Muni -another human character. An actor in robes performed Oppo Rancisis, and at least the head will be CGI. Others -only a couple of the Jedi are human, Mace Windu (Samuel Jackson) and Ki Adi Muni being two of them. The rest are mostly CGI creatures, actors in masks, and in the case of Yoda and Yaddle, puppets. Some of the alien Jedi will represent some VERY familiar species to Star Wars fans. The Kenner sneak-peek toy has been reported to be the Nimoudian Battle Tank and a Battle Droid action figure, but as usual there is no confirmation of this.

The Official Site has posted an update on the making of Ep.1 diary, and there is a couple of interesting shots of that yellow starfighter. It seems that it is called the Z-1 (from the pre-production drawings), however the site still refers to it as just the starfighter so that is what I am sticking with. I have updated my Mainstream Storyline, and am currently working on a more comprehensive alternate storyline. Keep your eyes on Lucasfilm......

07/24/98: The Prequel Watch Post:

"Yoda" (duh) - Puppet performed by Frank Oz and his crew. "Mace Windu" - Samuel L. Jackson. No big surprise there, been out there for a while now. "Yaddle" - Another puppet, most likely also performed by Oz's crew. "Ki Adi Muni" - Not much known on this character at this time, may be CGI. "Plo Koon" - The "cool" Jedi that TF.net referred to as the "next Boba Fett". "Oppo Rancisis" - Another mysterious one, possibly an alien. "Adi Gallia" - Ditto. "Depa Billaba" - Also a mystery at this time. "Zaclor Seeg" (?) - This one was barely legible on the sheet. "Salec Piln" (?) - Same with "Seeg", spelling may be off and may not be an actual Jedi Master. "Even Piell" - Last, but certainly not least... the character that will make many female "Star Wars" fans quite happy. Yes, a FEMALE Jedi Master! Played by actress Michaela Cottrell. (Source: Jedi Mike)

Very interesting... this seems to be cooberated by a report from TheForce.net:

"There was NO cyborg Jedi masters and I was on set both days they filmed the Jedi Council Chamber scenes. Other Jedi's - Samuel L. Jackson (of course), Yoda (of course), Yaddle (a younger version of Yoda), Ki Adi Amundi (alien) and Even Piell (alien). Will try and remember the others."

Some cool names here, but nothing from Lucasfilms. These are more submissions from "industry insiders" apparently. I will be the first one to admit I have no inside knowledge, in fact never even been to the ranch, but I guess at lest one of these informants must be legit. Right? Let me know what you think.

07/21/98: Well, the prequel world has been pretty quiet as of late, all around. Really the only thing that is being talked about is Steven Speilberg's reaction to some Ep. 1 rough footage and the forthcoming probable DVD release of the Special Edition Trilogy. In case you haven't heard, Speilberg was being interviewed for Saving Private Ryan, and somehow the prequels came up. His reaction was that he saw a rough cut of the movie and his response was enthusiastic to say the least. Nothing too impressive here, though, as I am doubtful that SS would be anything other than enthusiastic about his friend's movie. There is supposedly additional filming either going on or just wrapping up in Tunisia, but there is no information or decent speculation about it. I personally do not think that an Ep. 1 trailer will appear before the home VHS release of Titanic. There is some talk of a trailer appearing in the SW: SE DVD's but there is no word on when those might happen. I guess the Midiclorian thing has finally blown over.... In case you have not seen it yet, make sure to check out the "Clone Wars Explained" article by Bill Hays.

07/17/98: I guess the rumor about that Prequel teaser poster died before it even really came to life. In case you didn't hear, ACCESS HOLLYWOOD supposedly had one, but it was simply the collage from the official site presented as a poster. So I suppose everyone can dry their pants now. I thought it would be interesting to present a list of some of the names that George Lucas had used, then discarded, from the original trilogy. These appeared in the Annotated Screenplays and the novelizations:

Groups: Ashandi, Legions of Lettow, Jedi Bendu, Dai, Academy of Chatos, White Legions Places: Had Abbadon, Ketbrae, Kaalida, Aquilae, Granicus, Ophuchi, Baltarian/Baltar/Baltaria, Kaaleita, Granita Clusta, Utapau Concepts: Angel Blue, Bogan, Kiber Crystal, Ashla, Diary of the Clone Wars, Padawan, Battle of Concord Dawn Characters: Kane, Del Andue, Deak, Captain Jode, Akira Valor, Justin, Bink, Cos Dashit, King Kayos, Queen Breha, Windom, Huu Tho, Count Sandage, Camie, Clieg Whitsun, Datos Occo Quist, Boma, Oeeta, Ontross Holdaak, Captain Oxus, Aay Zavor, Ondos, Ttaz, Ton-Mummd, Minch, Sate Molock, Kadar.

We all know how GL never throws away an idea, and it is a fact he recycles names he likes. I think it would warrant a close eye to be kept on our part....

07/15/98: 'Well you can forget your troubles with those Imperial slugs. I told you I'd outrun 'em.' Got the computer problem under control, finally and none too soon. That article I promised is up, but insted of just plain text, I have it in a full technicolor reproduction. Pretty nice, hunh? Anyway, click here to view it.

07/15/98: Having big problems with my computer today, very close to throwing it out the window....

07/14/98: Hi, I have recently updated the look of my site, even though it has barely been online 3 weeks now. One always tries to tinker with perfection.... Anyway, I have gotten a lot of cool feedback from people running some of the other sites, especially the guys at Dark Side Prequel Rumors and The Star Wars Database. They are very cool cats, but I would like to hear some feedback from visitors. I think we can come up with some thought provoking ideas that are aside from the mainstream, but still accurate. I have a couple of old copies of a (now out of print) magazine called Fantastic Films, which was basically the Starlog and Cinescape of the 80's. There are lots of articles dealing with rumors of the 'upcoming' movies, i.e, Empire and Jedi. I am going to print a text version of these articles for your enjoyment very soon. I think these will give some ideas about how little we actually know of the prequels. It seems that nobody had a clue that Leia was Luke's sister, nobody believed Vader's paternal claim, and everyone was convinced that Boba Fett was Luke's mother! Oh yeah, it was widely held as common knowledge that Luke was going to die at the end of Jedi. Kinda shows us where we may be in our current thinking, hunh........

07/11/98: JediNet post:

1) "There *are* particles known as "midiclorians", but their meaning has been greatly exaggerated and blown out of proportion. They are particles found with in every single living being, but somehow more aptly found in some special individuals. These 'midiclorians' are what absorb the Force, and through training, anyone can develop them. They are NOT The Force themselves. There is still a VERY mystical element to The Force."

2) "Palpatine is not Darth Sidious. They are completely different characters. It is also TOO obvious. Lucas has something else up his sleeve."

3) "There have been various production versions of Jar Jar. They have altered his look on more than one occasion."

4) "The final scene has yet to be filmed. Although most of the final duel scene has already been filmed, the conclusion has not. Though this is all mostly conjecture, it seems that after Qui-Gon (I'll go as far as to confirm that name) has his duel with Maul, the scene will revolve around his confiding to Obi-Wan about the 'father' of Anakin. No one seems to have a script of it, though, with the possible exception of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor, but this much has been stated, as the scene is being referred to as the "Revelation Scene". That is all I know of the matter."
